Antacid Drugs

Antacid drugs are medications used to neutralize stomach acid, providing relief from symptoms such as heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux. These drugs work by directly counteracting the acidity in the stomach, thereby reducing irritation of the stomach lining and esophagus. Antacids are often available over-the-counter and come in various forms, including tablets, liquids, and chewables.

Uses of Antacids

Heartburn Relief: Antacids are commonly used to provide quick relief from the burning sensation in the chest caused by acid reflux.

Indigestion Treatment: They help alleviate discomfort in the stomach caused by excessive acidity, often referred to as “sour stomach.”

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Antacids can provide temporary relief from GERD symptoms, though they are typically used alongside other treatments for long-term management.

Ulcer Pain Relief: While not a primary treatment for ulcers, antacids can temporarily relieve the pain associated with stomach or duodenal ulcers by neutralizing stomach acid.

Side Effects

Gastrointestinal Issues: Depending on the type, antacids can cause constipation (aluminum-based) or diarrhea (magnesium-based).

Electrolyte Imbalance: Overuse of certain antacids can lead to imbalances, such as hypercalcemia (from calcium-based antacids) or alkalosis (from sodium bicarbonate).

Kidney Function Concerns: Prolonged use of magnesium or aluminum-based antacids can be problematic for people with kidney impairment, as these substances may accumulate in the body.

Masking Symptoms: Regular use of antacids without a proper diagnosis can mask underlying conditions that require medical attention, such as GERD or peptic ulcers.

Magnesium-Based Antacids

Magnesium compounds neutralize stomach acid by reacting with hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stomach to form water and other neutral compounds.

Aluminum-Based Antacids

Aluminum compounds neutralize stomach acid and have a mild constipating effect, often counteracting the diarrhea caused by magnesium-based antacids.

Calcium-Based Antacids

Calcium carbonate reacts with stomach acid to form calcium chloride, carbon dioxide, and water, quickly neutralizing stomach acid.
